Letter From The Principal

Hello Quakers,

I hope you are doing well! This is Principal Weiss and it is a great time to be a Quaker. Things in the building are going strong this year and we are excited for what is still to come.

By the time you read this, we will have had our Homecoming game—hopefully we saw you there—and for the first time in years we were able to run a Spirit bus to help students get to the game. Thanks to the alumni association for helping to support this! Check out the article by our new athletics and activities coordinator Ms. Barrett (See page _) for more information on our programs here at the building.

The school year has been one of transitions, as I started my first year as full-time principal: the biggest changes being the move from a three-period block schedule to a daily six-period schedule; and, a new cell phone policy focused on supporting our students in making healthy choices around cell phone use—and not using them in the classroom! Both have been off to a strong start as students and staff get into the rhythm of seeing each other and learning content every day instead of every other day. We are excited to see how these changes improve outcomes for our students, and future Quaker alums, as the year progresses.

This has already been a year of Franklin in the news as community partners continue to reach out and learn more about what is going on and what has gone on at Franklin. Our students were featured in two articles in the Seattle Times, one focusing on school fashion and one on cell phone use, and both pieces did a fantastic job representing Franklin. PBS was here to use our beautiful school as backdrop for their special ongoing back to school, and the Seattle Times is also researching an article featuring the historic theater organ that we have in our auditorium. To top it off, Jefferson Park golf course is being renamed after Franklin alum Bill Wright, and will now be called the Bill Wright Golf Complex! As principal it gives me great pride to see Franklin reflected in so many positive and public ways.

If you swing by to visit, you may see some changes as the interior of the building has been getting a bit of a facelift: the district is repainting the entire interior over several months so the hallways and rooms look sharp and crisp. As part of this process, we have the opportunity to clean up and reposition all of the classic photos, trophies, and trophy cases in the main hallway. I would love to get input from our alumni on what they most want to see in the hallways when they visit!

Thank you again for all that you do,

Principal Weiss
